Our Mission & History
Connecting epilepsy professionals across New England to advance care, research, and camaraderie.
The Greater Boston Epilepsy Society (GBES) was founded in 1995 by Dr. Andrew Cole from the Massachusetts General Hospital and Dr. Gregory Holmes, at the time from the Children's Hospital of Boston. GBES consisted of an informal group of academic physicians, private practice neurologists, researchers, neuropsychologists, neuropsychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and other professionals devoted to the care of patients with epilepsy, who met three times a year to discuss epilepsy cases and research. Their goal was to provide an informal educational forum as well as to meet and establish camaraderie with other local epilepsy professionals.

During the COVID-19 pandemic with a transition from in-person to virtual meeting, the Greater Boston Epilepsy Society was able to extend to the academic institutions throughout the New England region, transforming the society into New England Epilepsy Society.
Today, building on the legacy of the GBES, New England Epilepsy Society has grown to include members from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Children's Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Brown University, Connecticut Children's Hospital, Hartford Healthcare, Hasbro Children's Hospital, Kent Hospital, Maine Medical Center, MaineHealth Medical Group, Massachusetts General Hospital, Newton Wellesley Hospital, University of Massachusetts, and Yale School of Medicine.
